Super Saturday and vaccinations

Yesterday was Super Saturday - a day dedicated to getting as many people vaccinated as possible.  At 10pm last night, a total of 129,995 doses of the Covid Pfizer vaccine had been administered over the day. This included 39,024 first doses and 90,971 second doses.

Auckland reached a new milestone, with 89 percent of eligible people in the city vaccinated with at least one dose. Anyone over 12 is eligible for the vaccine. It is administered in two doses, currently three weeks apart. People are considered to have developed immunity to Covid-19 14 days after their second dose of the vaccine.

A breakdown of ethnic groups show it was the biggest daily vaccination doses for Māori yet, with 10,941 first doses and 10,874 second doses. The vaccination rate for Māori after yesterday is  44 percent (two doses). At least 66 percent of Māori have had one dose.

"I want to thank Māori providers for the enormous amount of mahi that has gone into making today such a success," Health Director General Dr Ashley Bloomfield said.

Pasifika numbers showed 4223 people turned up for their first dose ever, while 8093 received a second dose. That means 59 percent of Pasifika have now had both doses of the Pfizer vaccine. At least 80 percent have had two.

Overall, 65 percent of eligible population are now fully vaccinated, and at least 85 percent of us have had at least one dose.
