The land at Ihumātao was confiscated by the Crown in 1863 and has been in private ownership ever since. On 23rd July 2019, police served an eviction notice to a group opposing a housing development on this land. Thousands arrived to support the resistance and, while no formal resolution has been reached yet, organisers of the resistance see every day with no presence of housing developments at Ihumātao to be a victory.
