Living on the other side of the world often results in glasses that are rose-tinted, and filled with more than a little rosé. Never is this more apparent than the annual ‘Waitangi Day Pub Crawl’ that sees thousands of Kiwis descend on the London streets dressed as L & P bottles, and waxing lyrical on their missed comforts of home.
Many see it as an outlet for national pride and connection when one couldn’t be further from home, while others suggest it exposes a darker side, a side sweeping contention under the rug in the name of a ‘few fewies’ and a good time.
Year after year and beer after beer the celebration continues but is it at the expense of the issues still surrounding the 6th of February back home in Aotearoa? Or is it just a great way of celebrating all things Kiwi?
